Guys, we can all agree that after ghar ka khana, the next best cuisine is desi Chinese. From roadside joints to affordable takeaway places and expensive restaurants all over the city, you’ll find different desi variations of the menu. A lot of people (like my mom) think that making Chinese at home is a hassle and takes too much time. But honestly, if you have all the ingredients in front of you, most of the recipes can be ready within minutes!
What I’m sharing today is a quick recipe of Crispy Honey Chili Chicken inspired by Chef Ajay Chopra’s version. I’ve added a few extra ingredients which made this dish unforgettable at my home. You can use this dish as a side or treat it as an appetizer, in any case you will find it heavenly delicious!
Here’s what you need to make Crispy Honey Chili Chicken (Prep Time 15-20 mins)
- 2 tsp light soy sauce
- 1 tsp five spice powder
- salt (as per your liking/taste)
- 1 tsp red chili paste
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp corn flour
- 1/2kg chicken (cut in thin strips)
Ingredients to make the Honey Chili sauce:
- 2 tsp chopped garlic
- 4 fried red chilies
- 2 tsp red chili paste
- 2 tsp honey
- 2 tsp light soy sauce
- 2 tsp five spice powder (ready made powder should be okay)
- 10 ml vinegar
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp sriracha sauce
Ingredients for garnishing:
- 2 tsp spring onions (green only)
- 2 tsp roasted sesame seeds (should be slightly golden brown)
- 2 green chilies
- 1/2 tsp lime juice
How to Cook:
Take chicken strips and make sure that they are cut in strips (this makes them crispy as and when fried). In a bowl add the chicken strips, light soy sauce, five spice powder, salt, red chili paste, egg and the corn flour. You have to make sure that each strip of chicken is covered with corn flour so that when fried, it becomes crispy. Now in a deep pan, heat oil and add the chicken. Try to make sure that chicken strips do not stick with each other. Once the strips become golden brown, take them out on a plate (put tissue so that extra oil is soaked in).
In a separate deep pan, add oil and heat it. Add the chopped garlic, dried red chilies, chili paste(add 1 tablespoon of water to the paste so that the frequency is not thick), honey, light soy sauce, five spice powder, sriracha sauce, salt, pepper and vinegar. Mix the sauce for a few seconds and then add the fried chicken strips in the pan. Stir fry for a few seconds making sure that chicken is coated with the sauce.
Dish it out on a plate, and garnish with spring onions, roasted sesame seeds and thinly sliced green chilies. Add some lime juice on top for that extra kick! This dish is perfect for a get-together with friends or when sudden company arrives at home.
You can eat this with fried rice, fried noodles or even by itself. Trust me, you’re going to love it! 🙂
